Agami Primary School
Khulna, Bangladesh
Agami in collaboration with local partner JMTF started the Patharkhali Agami-JMTF primary school in 2005. The school is located in Koyra, Khulna. The location is in southern Bangladesh just north of the Bay of Bengals and the Sundarban forest.
The school is currently in the 6th year of operation. The number of enrolled students in grades 1 to 5 is 265. In addition, the school also offers pre-kindergarten or nursery level classes. It follows the government curriculum and the grade 5 students take part in nationwide exams to obtain their primary education completion certificates.
The school suffered a major setback in May, 2009, as cyclone Aila hit Koyra. The school building went completely under water, students lost all their books, and school was suspended for several weeks.
With the generous support of Foundation for Freedom, books and supplies were replaced and the school building was rebuilt on a stronger and raised foundation. The school is now back in operation, though many challenges remain with yet to be repaired infrastructure, and water-logging in surrounding areas.
