Zahir Uddin Gono Vidyapith

Khulna, Bangladesh

Our latest school support in Bangladesh went to Zahir Uddin Gono Vidyapith located in southern Bangladesh. This is a community initiated free primary school of 197 children, 46% girls.

The school receives no government support and only meagre funding from the neighboring city corporation. The school is held in a tin shed structure with 4 class rooms, no teachers' room, no toilets, and a non functioning tube well. There are 4 teachers receiving salaries that are only about 15% of the salaries paid to government funded public school teachers.

Foundation for Freedom provided funding requested by the local NGO Nijera Kori to enhance teachers' salaries, employ one more teacher, major refurbishing of the building structures, toilet facilities for boys and girls, furniture and ceiling fans, school uniforms for all children and establish a new tube well for drinking water.

This is an impoverished village community of share croppers, hired laborers and small farmers with low level of literacy amongst the adult population. With our help and continued support we look forward to enhancement in childrens' interest in education and overall improvement of literacy.
