Narayanpur Primary School

Gazipur, West Bengal, India

The Narayanpur Free Primary School comprises of a main hall and an adjoining smaller hall with mud floors, and without windows. The teachers and students sit on the floor. The area experiences heavy monsoon shower from June to September, often resulting in forced closure.

Developments in the primary school

The School is located in the most underdeveloped part of one of the most underdeveloped District of the State of West Bengal. The area is inhabited by agricultural laborers, and the literacy rate is very low. Due to the endemic poverty and poor infrastructure, the condition of the School is very bad. Because of lack of basic minimum facilities, the drop out rate is exceptionally high. A renovated school building with functioning facilities will create an environment conducive to learning and continued attendance. The school consists of 78 girl and 54 boys. The Foundation for Freedom adapted this school in December 2009 and has commited to provide funding for cementing the floors, constructing a roof, plastering the inside, paiting, adding windows and 52 benches and 4 tables and chairs.
