Shiksha Mandir School

Gurup Village, West Bengal, India

In the early nineties, Smt Tatini Banerjee started the Shiksha Mandir School for destitute children living in Gurup Village. The school offers a curriculum up to the 6th grade after which the students are admitted to the local public high school. Throughout high school, coaching and support for their education continues at Shiksha Mandir. All enrolled students are provided with clothing, snacks, milk, vitamins, books and utilities.

The school has grown from an initial enrollment of 20 students to the present 60 students. We have expanded the school building by adding a second floor with more classrooms and better bathroom facilities. The curriculum has been extended beyond the basics of mathematics and reading to include extracurricular activities like drawing, painting, singing and basket weaving. We hope to begin a computer education program soon.
