Tajpur Primary School

Gazipur, India

Tajpur is a village about 40 km south of Kolkata. The School is located in the most undeveloped part of one of the most undeveloped District of the State of West Bengal. The area is inhabited by the traditional fishermen, and the literacy rate is very low.

Due to the endemic poverty and poor infrastructure, the condition of the Tajpur Primary School is very bad. Even worse the school drop out rate is exceptionally high due to the of lack of minimum basic facilities. Therefore the Foundation for Freedom has recently approved a new project to renovate the current government run primary school so student can properly learn and to provide on going support of ~$100 for writing materials for students.

The Tajpur Primary School comprises a single storied building with a mud floor, without doors and windows. Free primary education is available to all children of the age group 4 to 9 after which the students are expected to join free secondary school located a few miles from the area. There are currently around 70 students enrolled in the primary school. Recently, a mid Day meal scheme was started and this has resulted in the attendance improving significantly. The two teachers and students sit on the floor. The area experiences heavy monsoon rain showers from June to September, often resulting in forced closure of the school.

The following improvements are going to be provided by the Foundation for Freedom when the required $6200 has been raised:

  • Cementing of the mud floor
  • Plastering of the inside walls and the building of a Baranda (porch)
  • Painting of the building
  • Construction of the boundary wall separating from the adjacent pond
  • Installation of windows and doors to prevent the rain entering the building
  • Provisioning of basic furniture and facilities

Once the renovation is completed and basic facilities are provided, the local people will be motivated to sustain the Project, as the recurring expenditure will be small. Also the Foundation for Freedom and local people will put efforts into creating a Fund to give stipends to deserving students. It is believed that this is the key to enabling students to continuing their education in this very poor area.
